CHAPTER SIX

Hours passed. For a moment, Lexi had thought that the waiting was worse than whatever was due to follow it. But then she thought about the stories that she’d read online. The rapes. The mutilations. The killings. The cannibalism. The destruction. Suddenly, the waiting felt idyllic.

So, Lexi waited.

Suddenly, her eyes snapped open. At some point she must have fallen sleep, but she couldn’t remember doing so. All she could remember was the waiting. But now that seemed to be over.

Something had woken her. Lexi looked around, taking in her surroundings. Her back lent against the wall next to the front door where she had been holding her vigil. The overhead lights kept the darkness at bay and, as far as she could tell, nothing appeared to be out of place.

But why did it feel so wrong?

Had someone rang the doorbell again? She didn’t think so. Besides, in her experience, people rarely pressed that little button only once. Sometimes it felt like they were playing a game of ‘whack-a-mole’ on it or something. But, whatever noise had woken her had certainly stopped now, leaving a void of silence in its wake. Feeling unnerved - which was pretty much how she felt all the time now - Lexi reached for the crossbow that had dropped to the floor beside her as she slept. Holding the weapon made her feel safer. Not safe. Just safer. And that was better than nothing.

Movement grabbed her attention. Something appeared to creep around, just outside of her peripheral vision. Lexi turned her head quickly, eager to see what was there. This wasn’t eagerness out of excitement. This was a need to know. She needed to know who - or what - she was sharing the house with. Her grip tightened on the crossbow in her hands.

But she still couldn’t see anything.

Whatever was there was determined to stay hidden; preferring to stay just out of sight. But, there was no doubt about it, something was there. And Lexi had no doubt that it was watching her as closely as she wished she was watching it.

‘Hello?’ she whispered and instantly regretted it. Feeling like she’d given away her exact position, even though she was sure that the thing had already seen her, Lexi pushed herself back against the wall. Part of her hoped that the wall would swallow her whole and then this nightmare would be over. The wall refused to grant her wish, and she remained pressed against it, letting its coolness ground her in reality. That realness was both a blessing and a curse. It helped her focus, but it also reminded her that this wasn’t in her head. Weirdness and danger had become her reality.

No replies came to greet her ‘hello’. The house was once again still and silent.

Trying to put it down to her over-active and over-stressed imagination, Lexi focused her attention on the crossbow. Having never fired one before, she thought that she should probably get some practice in before she had to use it for real.
